2008/9/30 Solitude, please…Not going anywhere today. The reason is that, tonight is Takbir night, before the Islamic new year. Although it might not be appropriate, I picture the event here to be analogous to an opened dam. End is the whole month of holding back (for most, about one or two week fasting). They go out to the street celebrating it, although luckily not up to hedonism scale yet. Since I’m younger, my parents doesn’t allow me to go out especially at night during such events. There are many peoples out on the street. The life standard for most peoples are not that good, added with euphoria and number of masses, don’t push your luck. But I somehow regret not going out, or maybe staying overnight at friend’s place. I had a cousin staying here, and I don’t know the single bit of what he’s doing here. He’s not going anywhere, the whole day he only stay in my room, reading my comic book collection, and do long-distance phone calls with his girlfriend. Why I’m not asking ? Because then some people would say I’m being rude and act as if I’m shooing him away. The operator here had ridiculous tricky price war in sacrifice of network reliability, one of it includes free phone call during midnight and local rate for call to the same carrier. Then, my parents’ friends are coming and things got really noisy out there. I read yesterday in a small quote book that in English, we have the word “loneliness” to describe pain of being alone and “solitude” to describe the glory of being alone. But I don’t think I could get either, especially the solitude in these situation -_- Last until who knows whenYesterday’s trail of events. Plan is set fine. Finally, we could get to a date. She’s been having trouble getting out of home lately. During the Islamic new year family is going to be busy with relatives, and she’ll get dragged to their other house out of town, so that means difficult week again. They does invite me to stay overnight, but I’ll be killed by peoples in my home for staying (my mom is rather paranoid due to her friends’ children’s bad experience). Kick that away, this is for yesterday. Went to Kinokuniya to pick up her birthday present, despite being a month late (I’m having budget problem back then). It’s a book, The Cloud Book (ISBN 978-0-7153-2808-8). As the title, the book is about cloud types and their descriptions. I choose it because of the many photograph of sky she’ll like ^^ Then, met with friends there and walk around a bit with them, looking at accessories, and clothes. They probably do shopping, but I’m only building my knowledge base about dress types. Afterward, we went to the supermarket. There’s a lot of imported ingredients I’d love to try and use. But being imported, the price is not friendly though. Afterward, finally, went to the restaurant and claim the seat reserved yesterday. Yes, an all-you-can-eat restaurant. I did some embarrasing mistakes like dropping dish though, I don’t have enough hand to take dishes enough to eliminate several round trips :P Probably because I get the wrong pace, my stomach is really full, can’t take more, it hurts. -_- But nevertheless, enjoyed every moment of it, because it’s really rare that we could be out together this late :) Weird way to start a morningBesides being unable to enter the server for the Live Meeting event this morning. Had probably three dreams. The first one is rather unsightful, so I’d rather forget about it. The third one is also forgotten. So, the second one felt like half-awake experience, where someone is pressing on my bellybutton (don’t know why). My body is still a bit stiff, being not awaken completely yet, but I managed to pinch the hand, and instead it pushed harder. Anyway, I woke up and the dream ended ^^; 2008/9/29 Big diggingIn front of the place I went out to yesterday. At least this time I think I’m sure which of my memories my brain used to build that 3D unconsciously interactive simulation world. The digging is probably combination of the FO cable project and those I saw on my way. Had dreams about taking pictures, too bad that it can’t be downloaded to my computer, because some of the scenes are pretty. By the way, I don’t really remember why, but I used a plastic cover for my camera, using the same not-hard plastic used for food package (not food-grade I suspect). 2008/9/27 National ArchiveWent to a mini gathering with friends from AnimeIndo forum. But that’s for 16.00. Before that, I went to the National Archive Building (Reiner de Klerk Huis) at Gajah Mada street. The building used to be the residence of a Dutch governor general, then through long history, switches hand again and again. Some I remember is a clergy who made it an orphanage, and a Dutch officer who used to work as a guard there for the previous owner. Then, it’s made office for the department of… what’s the term in English ? The department that do land survey and work on land certificates. It’s now a museum and historical heritage site. The building has been renovated on 1997. Like other old houses in the neighbourhood I visited, it has wooden floor and really high ceiling. There’s also an open and spacious inner courtyard. The front courtyard also has green grass and pond. Because there’s almost no visitor, the place felt really wide. Well, unlike the old town’s Fatahillah square, this museum is located in the middle of Gajah Mada street, and there’s no other historical tourism site close by. Unlike the other museums, no entrance fee. But actually no picture taking also. The person taking care of the place told me late. Well, he’s asleep when I came. The second floor (ask the person in the museum to go there) has their collection of maps. This is most of the collection I think. These includes maps from as old as the 17th century, covering the Dutch colony of East Indies (now, Indonesia). Some I remember are from Sir Stanford Raffles’ book on Java, as well as several geological survey maps of Sumatra island. The archives itself ? I think it’s land records. It has been moved to the new archive building in Ampera. DemocracyBeen thinking of this “Imagine break”.
Often, from motivational show, I got the feeling that one of the standard approaches is to give a feeling (illusion?) of pride, independence and power upon yourself and the world. Well, it’s true, we can’t make a pond without having a single drop of water. But seeing it from the other side, we’re also not alone. The end result needed everybody else’s voice also. You’re not a god, just one among the many who have that equal voice as you (well, ideally). So, your voice matter, but so is theirs, and the final result will be for the greater good, not your good. A single drop of water can’t form a pond, many drops of water does. So, have pride, but don’t look so high of yourself :D In that case, why give everyone that feeling of “worthiness” ? Well, if everyone think they’re so insignificant, they’ll become apathetic right ? Not healthy. Anyway, that’s ideally, without interference & interaction between elements and not counting the application of psychology to control opinion of the mass. In two words, controlled environment. 2008/9/26 Finally, vacationThe last day at work is kind of relaxed. Amazingly, not many are taking early days off. Other than one book I’m working on, the rest of the time is browsing, reading Shinigami no Ballad (nice story ^^) or fallen asleep on the table. Perhaps it’s just me, but somehow, my boss is most of the time out of office when her boss calls to our place. By the end of the day, there’s light shower. Actually a good reason to take home the umbrella I kept under my desk. The rain stopped though, but since I’ll not be going there for more than a week, better take it home. Straight bus get. Arrived home early. My father’s friend is visiting from Australia (seems like his son got Australian PR and bring him in). That goes, we went out to dine with the family. My brother’s not included, he’s enjoying the freedom of long vacation outside, not coming home. Although he did mention his class accept only official public holiday (on Wednesday and Thursday) and not the extended vacations. For tomorrow, will be going to the national archive building (museum) and then dinner with friends. Better get enough sleep. I also switched my contact list in my phone totally to Live Contact. Lets see how far it goes. But by using Live contacts for phone contact list, their messenger online status can also be seen from the Contacts application. :) (Don’t) want to be like BellerophonThe late several days, I get many questions that ask a simple yet difficult question of barrier for technology adoption. Some of those questions are like, the “Will smart phones replace regular phones” @ Gizmodo, a reply Technogran get when inviting someone to use the new Live Messenger, my own comment on my post about “use-case”. And of course, my mom’s comment about why my old phone (a Nokia N71) she use as replacement for her broken old phone is so difficult to do anything with. Of course, there’s also economic reason like when I told my girlfriend about the Android phone and how it have access to many of Google’s online service (which she used, Gmail and Gtalk as her preferred service, so I thought she’ll be interested). But she showed disinterest because of the data plan cost. Even so, she do mention more than once that my Windows Mobile phone is too complicated (in term of many function rather than usability). It’s status quo, really, like a company that has enough worker asking “so, tell us, why should we hire you ?”. Or asking someone who sells enterprise system “why should we use your product ?” instead of “what will your product bring us ?” Not many will find it amusing to adopt new technology. Example I hear during college year is, implementing new ERP would need not only the devices and application, but also staff training and even modifying business process. Well, for us commoners ? Planning of events can be done through phone calls, SMS or even real live meeting. Planning a meeting can also be done through same channel, not to mention we have a “flexible” schedule (that is, 1.5 hours late is tolerably normal). Not to mention, having a set schedule gave the psychological effect of being chained by the neck for something that should have been fun. Instant communication can be done by SMS messaging, besides, keeping GPRS always on is expensive (psychologically, despite the cost is counted by volume of data), not to mention the configuration. E-mail communication ? If you could send SMS, what need for that, not to mention not many want to do it using phone. Adding more resistance to the e-mail, many had their computer at home and work. What if they don’t fancy reading spam of chain/joke mails (which last time I peek at my campus friends’ inbox, is their main e-mail traffic) when they’re mobile. The main mail traffic in the company’s mailing list includes obituary, off by sickness, or child birth news from the HR department; and not to forget, those forwarded spam mails. Those un-technical difficulties summed up, and it’s the major hurdle in using a certain social software solution, namely “network effect” or “critical mass”. So, how would you explain to peoples when they asked, “why should I ?” 2008/9/25 Messenger! At last! It took giving note to the IT staff to remind him that someone asked the Live Messenger’s port to be opened. Anyway, I can use Live Messenger from my office now, at least until we move to the new room and will need another reminder note again. On unrelated note, I hope the new office have newer and faster elevator (thin hope) and more stock of spoon in the pantry. Opera Mini global testFor those using Opera Mini browser in your mobile phone. Have you tried the new beta client ? I went to the blog once in my phone and they said they’re testing new server in US. The new client will automatically choose one between the two servers. I felt some improvement on speed using the US server, maybe because there’s still less users torturing it. But for peoples in the US, you might even get more improvement because it’s not located across the sea on the old continent. To get it, visit http://mini.opera.com/globaltest/ from your mobile phone. I’m not so sure I remember the url correctly, so feel free to correct me. The syndrome that is counting minutesBefore vacation begin. So, the moon is entering her last phase, meaning soon, the Ramadhan month will be over and that means vacation. Most peoples go back to their hometown, leaving the city quiet. BTW, there’s something about mudik (going back to hometown) culture. Even though they only get lowly paid job, they will most likely bring home as much money as they can (even on debt), wore nice clothes, and act like they’ve become successful in the capital. Probably this is so they’re not looked down by their neighbours. Other effect is, they bring their unsuspecting relatives, friends and neighbours back, creating wave of urbanization of less skilled workers. Anyway, that’s out of topic. After half a month, it’s already easier to see peoples stopped fasting and took meal earlier when by their religious teaching they shouldn’t. The last week it’s more critical, you know, like volcanoes looking ready to erupt any time soon. Street also become more congested. I don’t know if this is because of the fasting for almost a month, or just because they’re already high in anticipating the long vacation. And talking about vacation, the HR department decided we got longer vacation. Previously, it’s only on October 1-3. But now, we had it from 29-3 (plus the Saturday and Sunday). 9 days off! Two office day left :D 2008/9/21 Arr…rgh!!!Not in participation in Talk like a pirate day, that’s just combi of small frustrations. Because I spent a lot yesterday, I decided staying at home for several reasons actually, even though there’s electrical blackout this afternoon. My brother, just got back home, said the power plant is smoking, no descript about how it’s smoking though. The small reason I hesitate is my mother. If I get out, she’ll definitely tell me to go to the saloon and cut my hairs shorter. I like it longer and most peoples I know prefer it longer too. On the TV now, outside in the living room, is a talk (monologue) show hosted by a motivator, the type of person I don’t like. This specific person somehow ticks my nerves more than the others. I don’t know how people might think his words are deep; but in my opinion, his sentence are too winding, uneffective, with monotone intonation that made the alarm in my head screams “Mind control alert”. He kept telling things that if you think about, those are in-matter-of-fact subjects. Ah, and that intonation made me want to punch the TV too. Then, I tried the suggestions in Liveside’s Wave 3 forum about synchronizing Outlook calendar with Live calendar. Err… actually I tried the trick for ActiveSync, changing the default account to Windows Live’s mail account. Then, synchronize! No change. Still synchronizing with the old Personal Folder. Oh well, will try it again tomorrow. Live Call betaFound a funny thing yesterday. If you’ve installed the Wave 3 Beta, then you might know a new application called Live Call. Now, this application seems to also install something called “Click-to-Call BHO”. What this thing do is change something that looks like phone number into link. For example, 01-23-4567 You might be able to click that number, but I’m not using any HTML tag to link it. It’s plain text, the BHO change it to a link. I noticed this when browsing a forum, where the dates are formatted like that. Where do you think these kind of thing can be used too? Messenger presence perhaps? Or maybe implementing Smart Tags ? (hasn’t heard of that product name for long) :D Those that doesn’t like it could click on the “Option” (gear icon), “Manage Add-on”, and “Enable or disable Add-on” from Internet Explorer and then disable it. Note: Anyone know how the format for livecall: number ? 2008/9/20 An hour for a bowlGot my Dragon Age magazine, edition 2008-09. ^^ To reduce the distance, I switched several plans, specifically the looking around and picking up book. Luckily, only several small glitches. While looking to fill the books I missed earlier weeks, I found out that the stock in Plasa Semangi’s Gramedia book store already runs out (or returned), so I only managed to get two. Finished Lovely Days 4 too, one book in the series left. Anyway, list of things to look for. The SiS service centre doesn’t have the headphone jack adapter. Next thing in list is checking up notebook model for my brother. There’s not much notebook shops there though. By the way, when sitting in the coffee shop, having iced camomile tea the store attendant say iced green tea, I saw someone having interview. I sat too far to eavesdrop. Never really had such long interview before. My previous ones are simpler and not too psychologically intense. Around 16.00, moved to Kinokuniya and pick up the book. The Ramadhan decoration there looks good, especially a spot in an alley made for seating spot. They have colourful fabric and carpet with Arabian style. Ah, there’s also a furniture shop in the new area, but the design is too modern for me ^^; The dinner plan, I want to try Marinara. Heard the place is not really that good, but I’ll try based on curiosity. Too bad, the place is fully booked, had to look for another alternative. The alternative, left me waiting for an hour because they sent the order to the wrong table. The peoples in that table also doesn’t tell that the order went to the wrong table. *sigh* That’s the activity journal. But my personal travel journal for today is the claw on the sky. First it’s just two trail of clouds left by jet (I assume). But when going back, there are four long and thin clouds, glowing red by the sunset light. That’s my trophy for today :) Next week, I wonder if I could really save. The destination should be cheap, national archive building. If it’s the same as museums, should cost really cheap to visit. Wave 3, from desktop to the cloudThe newest challenge from Community Clubhouse is Announcing Windows Live Beta releases. Windows Live is software + service. We had the services in the cloud (or the internet) such as Live Space, Mail (now with new Calendar and To-Do list), Skydrive, etc. And not to forget, the Live Messenger server. But like the Live Messenger service had a software application, Live also had other desktop applications you could install to enhance the experience more. But then, this sounds more like Service + Software isn’t it ? ^^;;; Anyway, Microsoft released the new version for it’s Live softwares first before the upgrade for online services. If you want to try it directly, you could visit the download page. This is the official location to download the softwares. Also if you notice, the download page, and the new Live Calendar had used the new header which felt lighter than the old one with it’s strong line. Missed the pearl though. Anyway, that’s a preview of how Live websites will (hopefully, also uniformly) looks like for at least a year to come. List of applications that can be downloaded is:
Those I greyed out are the products I rarely or never use. The installer, like the new Windows platform website theme, felt lighter than the old Vista style. In comparison, I think this one felt like a soft screen with light, rather than Vista’s glossy metal feeling. The new Live Mail beta. In a glance, the only thing changing is the interface design. Instead of the blue bar, by default all (except messenger) had white bar instead of blue. But there’s also another change. The menu now doesn’t feature icons, only texts. Also, if you see to the bottom left corner, there’s the new killer feature added. Calendar access from Live Mail. You could add events, and then it will be synchronized online, just like your Live Hotmail account. In addition, you could send the event through e-mail to your friends, and they can add it to their own schedule too. Outlook users, especially those in companies using Exchange server had have this for long time. For example, you could plan an event (e.g: meeting) and check for available meeting room. Then, you can also check your participant’s availability (if they’re busy during the time you initially planned) and then, send the invitation, waiting for RSVP. If accepted, then the invitation will be added to the person’s calendar. What’s still lacking? For me, it’s the lack of ActiveSync support. If that’s available, I could use Live Mail to manage my activities’ time planning, and it’ll be synchronized online. Although it won’t replace many peoples’ wish to have it synchronized directly, it will be enough to replace Outlook for non-business users in my opinion. MessengerLive Messenger is the application that changed the most. In Vista, it has Aero styled border. Then, it also has Scenes (called Theme in the new Windows Live website’s design). What used to be called Groups are now named Category. I like it better, because it’s consistent to the name used in Outlook. There’s also addition of two special categories. Favourites and Groups. Sadly, I still don’t have enough contacts to explore this feature yet. Contacts list icon are now represented with the small squares by default. White means offline, green means Available, red means Busy and orange means Away. Again, liked this change because it’s simpler than the old icons, and also looks similar to Office Messenger’s status. What’s New list is also added. With this, you could see a scrolling list of what’s new from your Messenger contacts and your Space friends. More than the list in Spaces, the what’s new in Messenger also includes changing personal texts and user image. Okay, I always has a catch right? In Live Messenger, I can’t display my non-messenger contacts. They are peoples I had in address book, but doesn’t add their ID to chat with. Those contacts are still in the address book I could access using the Live Mail though, so don’t panic, they’re still there floating in the clouds. OthersThe other applications, Writer and Photo Gallery is rather straightforward. They offer what they do. Writer is mostly the same. They seems to have fixed the bug that involves putting random <p> tags every time the automatic smart quotes works. Photo Gallery had some extras, which are Person tag (for face identification). If there's more I could ask is the feature of Location tags and Geo Tagging like in Pro Photo Tools. Ah, and the full cheat list of query keywords to look for certain files; which I asked for in the previous Photo Gallery clubhouse live events. I'm still waiting for that. :D Photo Gallery also become more extensible. In previous version, the only server available for uploading is Live Space or Flickr (pics) and Soapbox (video). But now, third party could write a small application to allow Photo Gallery to upload to other servers too. In addition, the extra section is available for extension to applications that consume those media files. Microsoft already had two applications working, which are Photosynth, and AutoCollage 2008. Family Safety is interesting too. I didn’t use it, only reading overview on the download site. It mentioned the software, when installed, will be able to monitor and limit access to websites by children. Although I’m sceptic about these kind of parental control systems, I’m enthusiastic to see how this could be developed into something larger; for example, joining it with Mesh. PS: The installer in the website seems to be the type of installer I hate the most. That it, you only download some kind of downloader (instead of real installer for the applications), which when run, will download the other installers from the internet.
[Add] Thanks to John for the correction in his comment. The website does have link to download the whole package too. 2008/9/19 Calendar’s timingYesterday, I planned to write for calendar sharing today. But apparently, Live Calendar is upgraded today, with new interface, so I’ll need to do another screencaps ^^; The new interface is pretty, and it has to-do lists. Some sites has already posted reviews, but I planned this post as daily life category. There are two editors going to resign. The official reasons are as follow. One had married and will go with her husband to Japan. The other one want to try to look for different carreer. So, friends in the office want to make a farewell party. Probably it’ll be held next week, Monday after work. But since someone is sick, it might be postponed. Several titles also received approvals. That means more books ready to publish including one high-profiled title. About my plan, it worked. During the days, I managed to sleep earlier. But this might also be promoted by me using the time to type something rather than browsing. That activity also reduced my other activities in online forums. Although I woke up earlier, but I slept less during office hours. Ah, exception is today because last night when I’m already asleep suddenly my brother called for a weird question. For today, job is rather relaxed. My boss took day off. I’ll just need to report the progress next Monday. Ah, I heard the new employee will also come. Well, tomorrow’s plan is straight busy. Picking up book, checking of prices, then look for dinner. Would be a costful weekend again though. And talking about cost, I forgot to transfer the money from my friend. Got to do that first thing in the morning! I want to try that ayce restaurant in Sarinah, although there are source mentioning not to. I hope I could get the schedule right and still got a seat. 2008/9/17 Re-arranging activityLately, I’ve been trying to fix my wake-sleep cycle. Well, part of it is just kind of rebelling act perhaps, because of some thing I mentioned in earlier post. So, the pattern I try to keep is as follow. Arrived at home from work on 18.00 at least. Then, starting around 19.30, going to my room and starts typing stories on steady pace, peeking to the online discussion forums I attend. Then, go to bed on 21.00, waking up at 04.00. Maybe there will be time when I’ll fail, such as weekends. But I’m trying to get someone to go online earlier, and if we can’t meet, well, I get healthier amount of sleep hours at least. [Phone calls…] Ok. Change of plan for Saturday, pick up book in Kinokuniya. This month’s cheaper, probably Yen’s price is weakening for this delivery ? :D Wave 3 Live Suite public betaNew Windows Live Betas – Download Wave 3 Now! As many might have known the link. Public Beta for wave 3’s Windows Live Suite is online. I’ve downloaded and installed it, but hasn’t got the chance to use all of it’s features yet. So, quick glance, review I noticed most in half an hour usage. Messenger
Some features I hasn’t tried is the Scene (changing background picture) and Signature sound. The signature sound, sounds interesting. I think this means you can choose your own “ringtone” when you goes online. Live calendar support. Not many new and visible features so far, and no ActiveSync support. But, you had the mail client :) Photo Gallery Same as Mail, it has cleaner look IMO. And one shortcut that took my interest. Create Photosynth. :D There’s also Group for Peoples tag. No support for location tag yet though, but there’s Pro Photo Tools to help. Toolbar Fatter than before, twice the old toolbar I think. This doesn’t sounds good isn’t it, for peoples who want as much browser real estate as possible. Theme is already the same as the other in suite (except Messenger, that one is somehow more colourful). There’s also links to the main Windows Live online services, Home, Mail, Space, Photo and MSN headline. Writer Best for me is, Live Writer doesn’t throw in random <p> tags when the smart-quote auto replace kicks in. I didn’t expect much more from a straightforward tool like this and Mail, so it’s the small stuffs that made the difference for me now. Ah, and in the sidebar, the link to view stats of my Live Space is moved upward, next to the switch blog account list on top right. Will update with more comments tomorrow, I think. 2008/9/16 Sometimes, I feel hopelessSemi private entry I guess. Fuh… anyway, I’m hoping to finish that editing by tomorrow. The translator is one of the easier one, and this is the last in that set. But the publishing schedule meeting is not so well. We could only push out less than 50% of the weekly quota. To add the problem, there will be two weeks without any publishing, which should add burden to the monthly target. The whole problem in my opinion is in the approvals. Bottleneck in communication with the agency in Japan. I really wished the company could next year push in the contract some sort of penalty if the agency or publisher is ruining the deadlnes by answering of requests so late. That’s the main reason why our publishing schedule is so screwed up and inconsistent. 2008/9/14 Yesterday’s SynthHere’s the link: Kebon Jahe Cemetery Synth. And if you asked “will it synth” ? Only 25%. I missed many important linking angles, so maybe I should make a map listing the missed shots and took the picture again sometime to complete it. But one thing I noticed when building stack of pictures for synthing larger areas is… fatigue. It might be more fun to do it with friends, assigning everyone to different quadrants the gather it together and see how everything joined together. |
